EDITORIAL: Govt Must End ASUU Strike Now And Halt This Crime Against Nigeria

EDITORIAL: Govt Must End ASUU Strike Now And Halt This Crime Against Nigeria
How can education thrive in a state of emergency? Can some one very close to the President tell him that lifting the siege on those parts of the country would lead to ASUU listening to government. Open campuses in a state of emergency is a recruitment ground for chaos.

End the siege on Nigerians, provide their needs and empower the people to work.

Provide electricity, invest in agriculture and sponsor citizens who are willing to do business ,trade and study.

What is happening in Nigeria is inconceivable.

PRAYER IS THE MASTER KEY!

"Grant, O God, that our President and leaders may approach every question of foreign policy from your point of view, that their noblest thoughts may be purified and strengthened.

Help us check in ourselves and in others every temper which makes for violence, and all promptings of self-assertion, isolation, and arrogance, that we may understand the aspirations of other countries, and may gladly do what lies in us to remove every misunderstanding, thus serving the welfare of all people.

Holy God, you have made of one blood all nations that dwell upon earth.  Look with mercy upon us, and drive away our evil passions of fear and hatred.  Grant that united in good will we may live together in charity and joy, each in the praise of great achievements, in rivalry of good and beneficent deeds, and sharing in truthful and just dealings with one another.

Increase, O God, the spirit of neighbourliness among all who dwell on earth, that in peril we may uphold one another, in suffering tend one another, and in loneliness befriend one another.  Grant us brave and enduring hearts that we may be strengthened, until the strife of these days be ended and you give peace in our time.

O Thou protector of the universe, ruler of its destiny, abode of happiness and peace, ocean of mercy, friend of the poor, destroyer of the pangs of want, everlasting, whole, unending, beginning-less, perfect, ancient of days, refuge of thy people, beloved of the heart, and guardian and mainstay of life, grant us peace in our time.

Amen."

The Creation of the United States of Abraham;Panacea for peace in the Middle-East.

By Segun Badmus

23/10/2013

Taking a cursory look at history from the time of Prophet Abraham. It is noteworthy to agree that Abraham is the father of faith and was promised to be the father of all Nations. And taking a cogent look at the territorial realities, historical affinity, cultural identity and racial groupings of the land of Palestine and Israel,it could be accepted that it is the land of Abraham.

It is on this premise I suggest a Federal system of government which binds Israel and Palestine into a United States of Abraham. It could solve the issues of Jerusalem being the capital of both Nations,it could reconnect the West bank to link up with other cities,it would solve the issue of  the aerial control of the port city of Ashdod, it could solve the issue of Gaza blockade from both sides of the borders,it could solve the issue of Golan height border tension with Syria ,it could make settlement issues form part of a nation's quest for development. Both Israel and Palestine nation combined is a small territory, even not as big as Mpumalanga Province in South Africa.

The continued grandstanding from all sides do no one any good. The continued sponsor of terror is worsening the humanitarian situation in Palestine and it is creating fear in the lives of an average Israeli, it would obviously affects the future of the unborn generation. If we do not sacrifice now,it would backfire in the future when warfare wont be fought with bombs and guns. When wars could be fought with chemical and nuclear war weapons. Where technology could drive a paradigm shift in the way we cause havoc.

Some would argue that the Israel/Palestine issue has been an age longed problem that defies solutions. Some would say there is a curse that would never be lifted. But I posit that in the history of man, there has never been a permanent situation, change has been the only constant thing in the evolution of the human race. There was a time Jerusalem was under ruins, there was a time Egyptians were holding Israelites captives, there was a time America was under the control of the Queen.

My emphasis is that,a time to unite the progenitors of Abraham into a nation that was promised to father Abraham found on free and democratic principles is here.Even though it may sound ridiculous at first thought, a cursory look and in-depth reasoning of my suggestion could provide the needed answers to the centuries old crisis that has defied human solution. Some argued for a 2 state solution that is practically impossible, taking into account the territorial realities that makes it inconceivable to have 2 States carved out on the ground. The continued obstinate nature of all leaders who are supposedly saddled with the job of thinking above board and leaders who are expected to think and act for the future could only create a template for chaos that may eventually consume a generation,if no positive action is taken now. The earlier we face the realities of creating a sustained and justifiable entity that takes the rights of every citizen into consideration, whether you are Jewish,Arabic,Islamic,Christian, Pagans and all people from all walks of life, people with one connection or the other to these historical lands.

As our President veers off on pilgrimage to Israel /Palestine and meeting the two leaders of these territories,he may use the opportunity to pinch the Israelis and Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza about deciding the road map to peace. The continued divisive tendencies from vested American and Israeli interests in the United States is a stumbling block to peace and must be discountenanced as a peaceful middle east is catalyst for world peace and development. Let us alter the thinking process that promotes supremacy battles, hate, violence, and forcefully delimiting the freedoms of other people. Instead we should bring all these energies into positive direction that would ensure peace and sustainable development.

With the olive branch from the new Iranian President Rouhani and the new mindset of the Iranian elites,we could fashion out a lasting means to restoring peace to the people of these territories. If democracy is about the people and it is the participation of the majority to decide who and what governs them, then we should allow democracy to determine the future of the people of Abraham.

The United States of Abraham could be the solution to the division between Israel and Palestine.

Thank you.

21 QUESTIONS FOR THE MINISTER OF AVIATION!

By Segun Badmus

While the people of Nigeria were engaging in the furore that broke out in the aftermath of the procurement of 2 bullet proof cars by the NCAA for the use of the Minister and its Ministry. These pertinent questions must be asked.

1. How much is the budget of the Ministry of Aviation for the 2013 fiscal year?

2. Was the purchase of 2 cars in the budget of her Ministry or in the six agencies under the ministry of aviation(NCAA,FAAN,AIB,NMA,NCAT,NAMA)?

3. If there was a budget in any of these parastatals for the purchase of cars worth 225 Million Naira; What procurement process was followed?

4 Was the intended supply of the car advertised to the public?

5. How many quotation were received from suppliers?

6. How many companies were contacted for the best price for the car?

7. Did the Minister approve the spending?

8. Are the security clusters aware of the threat,if so; where is the complaint?

9. Did the Minister report the threat to her life to the Inspector General of Police?

10.Where is the evidence of threat to her life?

11.Why has a Minister lost faith in the Police, SSS and Intelligence of the Nation?

12.Was the issue of the purchase discussed at any official meeting?

13.Who negotiated with Cosharis Group on behalf of NCAA and is Coscharis Company the cheapest supplier for these cars?

14.Were other companies given the chance to submit their quotation?

Why the American Rich are Becoming Richer and the Poor Becoming Poorer

The American Dream is still very much alive, it appears, but for whom?
According to the Huffington Post, America is tops in “creating really, really rich people.” We’re talking $50 million and then some rich–collectively totaling over $2 trillion–more than the entire bottom half of the country; more than the GDP of Italy, Mexico, Canada; and equal to about two-thirds of all taxes to be collected in the U.S. for 2013.   Forbes claims that makes a spike from last year’s $1.7 trillion–up half a trillion!
In a year’s time the net worth of Forbes 400 members also rose to its highest ever–$5 billion.  Just to make it on the list the game was raised by $1.3 billion. Atop the wealthy list are the usual players–Bill Gates at $72 billion and Warren Buffett at $58.5 billion, etc. But how does America create such wealth in such quantity, and more so than the rest of the world?
According to CNBC’s Robert Frank, “younger Americans are accumulating wealth at a faster clip than their baby boomer counterparts,” and many of those younger wealthy Americans have made their fortune in the tech industry, such as Mark Zuckerberg, Google’s Larry Page and Sergey Bring, among others.  The pace of the tech field makes for a ripe industry through constant innovations and competition.  Creativity and know-how can rocket one to wealth overnight in such a field, so wealth has the ability to accumulate very quickly, in a manner that would have taken much more time in industrial ventures for obvious reasons.  It’s much easier to spread one’s business across the web than location by location in the physical world.
The demand for such industries as the tech industry, coupled with today’s youth culture and rapid means of growing and advertising one’s business, creates an economic intersection of higher salaries, which leads to an obvious more rapid growth of wealth, as well.  Brian Dombkowski, chief investment officer of Sand Hill Global Advisors, out of Palo Alto, CA, thinks the game has changed. “Young entrepreneurs today made their money by building a better mousetrap, and they have been rewarded by the market for it. We have seen significantly more wealth creation than we did in earlier generations.”  Perhaps, as businesses learn to refine their use of advertising, building, and networking on the web, the world is simply reaching a new norm in production of wealth?
Stocks are also another means and reason for rich Americans’ soaring wealth.
According to another CNBC article by Frank, stocks are primarily what’s driving America’s wealth.  One needs to have a couple nickels to rub together in the first place to begin playing the stock market.  The poor are nearly invisible in the major apparatus forcreating wealth in the country.  While such an apparatus is excessively beneficial for the rich, it is entirely detrimental to average Americans, certainly the poor, and serves to undermine the stability of the country.
This is just one nail in the inequality coffin Nobel Prize in Economics winner Robert Shiller has talked so much about.  Stocks, Frank wrote, “have been on a tear this year in the U.S., which has mainly benefited the top 5 percent, who own 60 percent of all individually held stocks.”
This is why, in America, people say, “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”  This is why social unrest and the Occupy Wall St. movement sprang up and resounded with such resonance around not only America, but the rest of the world.  This is why, “Some day, we will have nothing left to eat, but the rich!” as they say.
Why did it spread around the rest of the world?  Because America has its mitts and boot prints all over the globe.  Because we rob, rape, and plunder the rest of the planet for our wealth.  Or, the rich do, anyway.  And they use stocks and various investments, as well as criminal banking practices, war and tax havens to hoard and grow their wealth exponentially while the rest of us live hand to mouth.  As long as there is inequality in America, there will be inequality in the rest of the world.
America contains the most wealthy first and foremost due to its exploitation of the rest of the world, and those wealthy are then able to utilize the current economic free for all across the globe to skyrocket into the financial stratosphere (why would one ever retire?), stashing their bloated fortunes in tax havens wherever they can find them, leaving the rest of the world, poor, hungry, uneducated, without proper medical care, without the means for strong social programs for the elderly, disable, and challenged.  Worst of all they buy up our land and water, destroy them along with the air, and use their arrogance to fence us out of the free and natural world, not to mention a happy, sustainable life.
Perhaps the most frightening of all is that America does not even yet realize that it is not next on the auction block.  It is on the auction block.  Those paying attention fear it has already been sold.
Welcome to the American Dream.

Here is your Friday story

Teaching a "Life Lesson"

"Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it, piece by piece - by thought, by choice, courage, and determination."

That quote is from Coach Matt Labrum and is a memorization requirement for the 41 teenagers on his football team. There is more. Those 41 young men also have to document several hours of community service, show they are passing all their classes, and stay clear of any discipline issues at school. So is Coach Labrum trying to coach football or be a "character cop"? Hold on!

Coach Labrum is doing what more coaches, parents, teachers, and bosses should do in their positions of authority. He is making the point that - using his own words - things like playing football are a "privilege rather than a right." And privileges bring responsibilities. They do not confer permission to swagger, cheat, bully, take advantage of success, or otherwise act like a knuckle head.

As background, you need to know that Coach Labrum had learned about some pretty ugly behaviour by the members of his team at Union High School in Roosevelt, Utah. Some of the football players had been bullying a kid at their school. A campus culture among the football players had them skipping classes, being disrespectful toward their teachers, and being generally obnoxious. So on September 20, Labrum suspended the entire team and confiscated their jerseys.

Labrum did what parents sometimes do with four-year-olds. He put his players in time out. He took away their toy. He called off the remainder of the football season - if his players could not commit to and carry through on something more important than football.

They had to become better people.
The "contract" Labrum and his staff offered team members the next day gave them the option of community service, counselling, and strict accountability. Playing football for him would no longer be anyone's right. It would be a privilege earned by rigorous on-the-field drills and responsible off-the-field behaviour.

One of the more encouraging things about this story is that school officials and parents have backed up the coach's actions. A mother of one of the players involved probably said it best. "These boys are not going to be hurt by this," she said. "It's a good life lesson."

Bud Selig has announced he is stepping down as the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. I nominate Matt Labrum for the position! Athletes from all sports who set such sorry examples of poor sportsmanship, use of PEDs or other banned substances, and shameless self-indulgence could use a life lesson too.
Learning to be a better person is far more valuable than a winning season.

US House passes bill to reopen government

President Obama said on Wednesday "we need to get out of the habit of governing by crisis" [Reuters]
Congress has passed a measure to avert a threatened US default and reopen the federal government, a move intended to end a prolonged fiscal crisis that gripped Washington and threatened the world economy.
The deal, however, offers only a temporary fix and does not resolve the fundamental issues of spending and deficits that divide Republicans and Democrats. It funds the government until January 15 and raises the debt ceiling until February 7, so Americans face the possibility of another government shut down early next year.

Both the Democrat-controlled Senate and Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved the plan, which President Barack Obama will sign before Thursday's deadline for Congress to increase the federal debt limit.

Obama applauded the Senate compromise and said he was ready to sign it into law. Speaking at the White House Wednesday evening, he said that they could "begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease from our businesses and from the American people".
"We need to get out of the habit of governing by crisis," Obama said, speaking at the White House. He announced his intentions to move forward this year and work on new bills, including reforming the "broken" immigration system, passing a farm bill, and working on a "sensible" budget.

But House Speaker John Boehner did not agree to the move quietly. Although he said that he and his fellow Republicans "fought the good fight and did not win", he added that they were not giving up on the fight to bring down US debt and cripple the president's signature health care overhaul.
"Our drive to stop the train wreck that is the president's health care law will continue," Boehner said in a statement.

Refusing a 'ransom'
With the deal announced, US stock indexes jumped by more than one percent in trading late in the day.
S\\
Reid thanked McConnell for working with him to end what had become one of the nastiest partisan battles in recent Washington history. "This is a time for reconciliation," he said.

A long line of polls charted a steep decline in public approval for Republicans, who were left with little to show for their fight; in political terms, the final agreement was almost entirely along lines Obama had set when the impasse began last month.

The crisis began on October 1 with a partial shut down of the federal government after House Republicans refused to accept a temporary funding measure unless Obama agreed to de-fund or delay his health care law.
It escalated when House Republicans also refused to move on needed approval for raising the amount of money the Treasury can borrow to pay US bills, raising the spectre of a catastrophic default.
Obama vowed repeatedly not to pay a "ransom" in order to get Congress to pass normally routine legislation.

The hard-right "Tea Party" faction of House Republicans, urged on by conservative Texas Republican Ted Cruz in the Senate, had seen both deadlines as weapons that could be used to gut Obama's Affordable Care Act, designed to provide tens of millions of uninsured Americans with coverage.
But Cruz said after the deal was announced that he would not block the vote, a key concession that signaled that both houses would act by day's end.

10 Life Lessons You Should Unlearn

Posted:

life lessons

By Martha Beck

In the past 10 years, I've realized that our culture is rife with ideas that actually inhibit joy. Here are some of the things I'm most grateful to have unlearned:
1. Problems are bad. You spent your school years solving arbitrary problems imposed by boring authority figures. You learned that problems -- comment se dit? -- suck. But people without real problems go mad and invent things like base jumping and wedding planning. Real problems are wonderful, each carrying the seeds of its own solution. Job burnout? It's steering you toward your perfect career. An awful relationship? It's teaching you what love means. Confusing tax forms? They're suggesting you hire an accountant, so you can focus on more interesting tasks, such as flossing. Finding the solution to each problem is what gives life its gusto.
2. It's important to stay happy. Solving a knotty problem can help us be happy, but we don't have to be happy to feel good. If that sounds crazy, try this: Focus on something that makes you miserable. Then think, "I must stay happy!" Stressful, isn't it? Now say, "It's okay to be as sad as I need to be." This kind of permission to feel as we feel -- not continuous happiness -- is the foundation of well-being.
3. I'm irreparably damaged by my past. Painful events leave scars, true, but it turns out they're largely erasable. Jill Bolte Taylor, the neuroanatomist who had a stroke that obliterated her memory, described the event as losing "37 years of emotional baggage." Taylor rebuilt her own brain, minus the drama. Now it appears we can all effect a similar shift, without having to endure a brain haemorrhage. The very thing you're doing at this moment -- questioning habitual thoughts -- is enough to begin off-loading old patterns. For example, take an issue that's been worrying you ("I've got to work harder!") and think of three reasons that belief may be wrong. Your brain will begin to let it go. Taylor found this thought-loss euphoric. You will, too.
4. Working hard leads to success. Baby mammals, including humans, learn by playing, which is why "the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton." Boys who'd spent years strategizing for fun gained instinctive skills to handle real-world situations. So play as you did in childhood, with all-out absorption. Watch for ways your childhood playing skills can solve a problem (see #1). Play, not work, is the key to success. While we're on the subject...
5. Success is the opposite of failure. Fact: From quitting smoking to skiing, we succeed to the degree we try, fail, and learn. Studies show that people who worry about mistakes shut down, but those who are relaxed about doing badly soon learn to do well. Success is built on failure.
6. It matters what people think of me. "But if I fail," you may protest, "people will think badly of me!" This dreaded fate causes despair, suicide, homicide. I realized this when I read blatant lies about myself on the Internet. When I bewailed this to a friend, she said, "Wow, you have some painful fantasies about other people's fantasies about you." Yup, my anguish came from my hypothesis that other people's hypothetical hypotheses about me mattered. Ridiculous! Right now, imagine what you'd do if it absolutely didn't matter what people thought of you. Got it? Good. Never go back.
7. We should think rationally about our decisions. Your rational capacities are far newer and more error-prone than your deeper, "animal" brain. Often complex problems are best solved by thinking like an animal. Consider a choice you have to make -- anything from which movie to see to which house to buy. Instead of weighing pros and cons intellectually, notice your physical response to each option. Pay attention to when your body tenses or relaxes. And speaking of bodies...
8. The pretty girls get all the good stuff. Oh, God. So not true. I unlearned this after years of coaching beautiful clients. Yes, these lovelies get preferential treatment in most life scenarios, but there's a catch: While everyone's looking at them, virtually no one sees them. Almost every gorgeous client had a husband who'd married her breasts and jawline without ever noticing her soul.
9. If all my wishes came true right now, life would be perfect. Check it out: People who have what you want are all over rehab clinics, divorce courts, and jails. That's because good fortune has side effects, just like medications advertised on TV. Basically, any external thing we depend on to make us feel good has the power to make us feel bad. Weirdly, when you've stopped depending on tangible rewards, they often materialize. To attract something you want, become as joyful as you think that thing would make you. The joy, not the thing, is the point.
10. Loss is terrible. Ten years ago I still feared loss enough to abandon myself in order to keep things stable. I'd smile when I was sad, pretend to like people who appalled me. What I now know is that losses aren't cataclysmic if they teach the heart and soul their natural cycle of breaking and healing. A real tragedy? That's the loss of the heart and soul themselves. If you've abandoned yourself in the effort to keep anyone or anything else, unlearn that pattern. Live your truth, losses be damned. Just like that, your heart and soul will return home.

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN AT THE EXTRAORDINARY SESSION OF AFRICAN UNION HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT IN ADDIS ABABA, OCTOBER 12, 2013

Mr. Chairman,

Madam Chairperson of the Commission,

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to participate in this meeting today on the subject of Africa’s relationship with the International Criminal Court.

Mr. Chairman,

While the work of the International Criminal Court is immensely useful for the achievement of a world without crimes against humanity, genocide and other acts of impunity, it would be fair to say that in Africa today, the wave of democratization has engendered greater commitment to the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights.

Indeed, the Constitutive Act of our Union explicitly prohibits war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity with clear sanctions for violations. I am convinced that our Union and the International Criminal Court are united in our principles and objectives on these matters.

This is why the profound dissatisfaction that has been expressed about the Court’s relationship with Africa deserves the special attention that this Assembly is paying to it at this session.

It is also the reason why the refusal of the International Criminal Court to accede to the requests by our member-states for the deferral of the cases involving the President of Sudan, and now, the President and Deputy President of Kenya has left many of us in the African continent disappointed.

Many are concerned that the African Union’s principled position that African leaders should not be targeted by the ICC has been ignored, and that the ICC, despite its universal jurisdiction, seems to be devoting unusual energy and enthusiasm to the prosecution of cases from Africa, compared to cases from other parts of the world.

If the Court is concerned about this implied allegation of bias; it has not, in our opinion, taken enough pro-active steps to address it and allay the fears of concerned stakeholders. We think it should.

Mr. Chairman,

In our deliberations today, we must not lose sight of the legal identity of our Union relative to the obligations of States Parties of the Rome Statute. Thirty four (34) African countries, including Nigeria, are signatories to this Statute.

Given that not all members of the Assembly are signatories to it, it is important that we balance our interests in a manner that enables signatory and non-signatory members of our Union to express solidarity with one another on matters arising from their obligations. In this regard, it is important that we maintain our unity and speak with one voice on Kenya.

It will also be useful to point out the limitations of the Rome Statute, in order to strengthen the ICC and reposition it for greater fairness and equity in the discharge of its noble responsibilities. This Assembly should urgently call its members in the Assembly of States Party of the Statute, to mobilize requisite support to achieve reforms in the shortest time possible.

Our position is that certain Articles of the Rome Statute are of grave concern to Africa. In particular, Article 27 which denies immunity to all persons without regard to customary international law, conventions and established norms, must be amended.

Similarly, Articles 63 and 98 need close scrutiny and review. There is also the need to align Articles 27 and 98 with a view to bringing them in conformity with the tenets of customary international law, conventions and norms.

Mr. Chairman,

In expressing my support for Kenya on its difficulties with the ICC, I will like to acknowledge that five years after the post-election violence of 2007, the people of Kenya have proven to the world that they are capable of expressing their sovereign wishes in a free, fair and credible manner in accordance with democratic norms and values.

This is a clear demonstration to the world that the people of Kenya are in the best position to determine their own future and deal with their past.

To further consolidate this, I would like to urge the Kenyan Parliament to hasten its consideration of the Report of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission to facilitate the implementation of its recommendations in order to accelerate the process of national healing.

What remains is for the international community, in particular, the ICC, to give the elected leaders of Kenya the space to discharge their mandate in meeting the aspirations and needs of their people.

I thank you

Different Letter to Syrian President Bashar Hafez AL-Assad.

Published by K.D. Maxwell
From an Afrocentric perspective.

Assalaam Aleikum Mr President.

My name is K.D. Maxwell, an African citizen based in South Africa and a student at Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute. I am the founder of the above mentioned group (World President).

Mr President I am writing to you today to share my thoughts regarding the on-going conflict in Syria.I have watched the conflict unfold from simple protests to heavy use of weaponry. I understand how difficult it has been for you as a Leader, since the conflict began on 15 March 2011. My deepest sympathies goes to the affected families whose loved ones, Fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, and children have been killed, maimed and injured . I hope in these difficult times that an amicable closure will be reached soon for the sake of the Syrian people.

The Syrian conflict has had huge impact especially on children; many of them have been uprooted from their homes, schools destroyed making learning difficult delaying their mental development which is foundational to their future and the future of Syria. Many have lost parents which is too painful to bear for any child and witnessed atrocities and suffered violations no child should everhave to endure.

Mr President, as a Father I am sure you understand how this feels. Mr President I note some of the major concessions you have extended to the protesters; it was particularly commendable to lift the country's emergency law, which was in place for 48 years, the abolishing of the state security court, which handled the trials of political prisoners, and approved anew law allowing the right to peaceful protests. This is in line with major international declarations on fundamental rights of all people.

Mr President, I would like to express concern over many weapons that have now ended up in the hands of radicals, which could further jeopardize the country even for the years to come. The UN Office for Disarmament affairs UNODA notes that "Insurgents, armed gang members, pirates, terrorists - can all multiply their force through the use of unlawfully acquired firepower. The illicit circulation of small arms, light weapons and their ammunition destabilizes communities, andimpacts security and development in all regions of the world”.

In the saying of Lao Tzu "Weapons, however beautiful, are instruments of ill omen, hateful to all creatures”.

I hope that regional countries that armed the rebels will have a foresight into the devastating effects the weapons they supply have caused and will cause long after the conflict is gone, just like it is now in Libya. And that according to the arms treaty they should be reminded of their responsibility to ensure public safety and to make sure that small arms from Government stocks are not misused anddo not enter illicit circuits, where their use may contribute to instability and to exacerbating poverty.

Mr President my council would like to commend you for officially joining the United Nations convention banning the use and development of chemical weapons today Monday Oct, 14 2013.After the 21 August poison attack (which is difficult to ascertain who used the chemical gas) on two villages outside Damascus your honesty displayed by your acceding to the convention is remarkably positive and in the interests of the Syrian people. And as noted by Ahmet Uzumcu, of the organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons your co-operation in facilitating the OPCW efforts is another notable work from you. We urge you to continue cooperating with the team of experts.

Finally Mr President I have just a few recommendations I would like to outline. I am of the persuasion that the destiny of Syria rests entirely in the hands of the Syrian citizens. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare (Lao Tzu). It is time for the sounds of guns to cease and the sound of people and dialogue to be heard instead. Peace is attainable through dialogue and even more dialogue, having all sides put away feelings of hate, resentment and anger. This must include every construct of the entire Syrian society.

However, your stand should continue to be inflexible where extremist groups with affiliation to terrorism are concerned. Dialogue must be characterized by a free exchange of ideas and opinions with an aim to reaching an amicable settlement. It might not be easy to reach this kind of settlement but certainly it is possible, with determination and positive attitude. While the international community has an obligation tohelp the Syrian people reach an agreement of the sort, they can only strengthen the initiatives started by the Syrian people. The people must determine what society they want to build hereafter and what will be the structures of governance they want in place to govern them.

I plead for the unconditional release of innocent persons, among them prominent human rights persons. I urge the Syrian security agents to show restraints in their efforts to maintain order. This is in line with article 5 and 9 of the Universal declaration of human rights which states "no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" and "no one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile"- CHILDREN MUST be protected and not violated, those who have violated their rights should be brought to book. In accordance to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.-Those arrested to be afforded fair, speedy, independent and impartial trial in line with Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of human rights.

We wish Syria a speedy return to constitutional order.May God bless Al-Jumhūriyyah Al-Sūriyyahyria (Syrian Republic) and all her people.

Why President Jonathan's National Conference is A Sham -Festus Keyamo

Between Tinubu’s and Jonathan’s Idea of a Dialogue, By Akinlabi Olusegun Samson

Published:
Just when the Jonathan government was celebrating the dummy they sold to Nigerians about a National Dialogue or when they thought they had hit a home run with their idea of a National Dialogue, Tinubu returned to puncture the balloon of their ego.

He literally threw a bombshell at the Jonathan National conference idea rejecting it and describing it in very apt terms as a Greek gift. Tinubu’s insight and analysis on the matter was profound. No wonder it resonated across the country and on the pages of newspapers and airwaves. Tinubu was not going to be sold a dummy. He had seen similar political somersaults and gyrations in the past and he could smell deception from a distance.

Here is some of what Tinubu, the All Progressive Congress (APC) leader said on arrival from London “the planned national dialogue is a ‘Greek gift and public deception… I say beware of Greek gift; let us first of all, ask series of questions. I am yet to consult with my party but I see some contradiction. I see deception here, but I will discuss with my party. I see lack of transparency”.

Suddenly, Tinubu’s paw-paw of the National conference idea sent the Jonathan government particularly it’s paid agents scampering and before long they unleashed a full attack on Tinubu accusing him of rejecting what he had asked for in the first place. In the rabid condemnation of Tinubu, what is clear, yet sickening is the evidence that those that have rushed to embrace the Jonathan conference will not want any opposition to their  idea.

For them, to attempt to ask a few fundamental questions about the timing and other issues surrounding the conference is unpatriotic and an affront on the President. This people do not speak for Nigerians as they claim. They speak for themselves and their pockets.
There is no double speak here on the part of Tinubu. The attempt by his detractors to attack his position by saying first he was for National Conference and now he is against it is both dishonest and disingenuous. We have seen this sort of rabid attack before. We know where it’s coming from and soon, the wind will blow and Nigerians will wake up to realize they have been hoodwinked. The flip flopping President is Jonathan  and his mascot, David Mark.

Through nearly two decades, Tinubu has been and remains an ardent believer in the idea of a Sovereign National Conference and also remains a consistent supporter and promoter of the idea. His principle position on this matter is well documented. He has called for the convocation of a sovereign nation conference that is authored by the people and conducted by a genuine, sincere and competent leadership, not the type we have now. His present rejection of Jonathan’s conference is anchored on several grounds of suspicion which the Jonathan team is yet to provide answers to.

Sometime in November 2011, while speaking at the Anthony Enahoro Memorial Lecture at the Benin Club in Benin City Tinubu said, “I submit to you today that because of the multiple issues surrounding our skewed federalism and constitutional flaws, the Nigerian nation is weak. Unless we move to strengthen it through dialogue and equity, we will remain a nation in mere words.
“And how do we transit from mere words to genuine nationhood? “The 21-member Presidential Committee on the Review of Outstanding Constitutional Issues (PCROCI) recently set up by President Good luck Jonathan falls short. It is a back door approach to the issue of national conference. In memory of Chief Enahoro we must convoke a national conference. It would provide a platform to address our pressing concerns.”

But in this present instance, he sees a President who suddenly wakes up and realizes that his administration is sinking and needs a safety valve. He becomes a later day convert to an idea he was vehemently against before now and hits on the strategy of organizing such a conference will silence his critics and keep his detractors busy. After all, it’s about the money and the opportunity to be part of the Abuja crowd. Its about buying time and spreading a false sense of patriotism.  It is a trick we have seen too many times by successive governments. And what came out of all the papers produced?  Nothing. We are still at the point we were some two decades ago.

For some people to be suddenly blinded to these facts and the unanswered question of why now, rankles the brain but no doubt understandable.

Another poser for the Jonathan choristers is  why is the Senate President, David Mark, who until now had been vociferous in dismissing a Sovereign National Conference, SNC, as “not workable under the 1999 Constitution,”  now the campaigner in chief for the Jonathan national conference?

Again, why did it take Jonathan almost three years to agree to the fact that Nigerians deserve a national conference or perhaps they have been living in another country or is it because it has become expedient politically? The timing of this conference is suspect. It is coming up when the present government is embroiled in corruption, the ruling party is in crisis, the security problem posed by Boko Haram never lets up and when a large swathe of the people are despondent and frustrated by a government that promises much but delivers little. With just about one year to conducting national elections, the government wakes up to commence what should be a serious and painstaking process of constitutional review or better still a national talk shop that will only distract and waste hard earned national resources.

These are the issues and not that the nonsensical attacks and condemnation of Tinubu for taking a principle stance on this matter. He should be commended and not condemned for having the presence of mind to pose and ask critical questions.
The fact that Tinubu is not willing to accept fake for original does not in any way mean that he is now against the idea, as many Jonathan choristers and people in desperate need of jobs and relevance would have us believe.

To the contrary. Tinubu has taken a principled stance on this matter for which no one can challenge him. History bears him out about his consistency and clarity on this issue. It is very well documented. Even the chairman of the advisory committee, Senator Okorounmu himself admitted that Tinubu, the former Lagos Governor had been in the forefront of the demand for a Sovereign National Conference (SNC).

In his reaction on Monday, Okorounmu said: “Tinubu must have been misquoted. Tinubu has been one of the financiers of the agitations for national conference. He funded the PRONACO conference which was held in Lagos.
“So Tinubu has been at the forefront for the agitation for national conference so the press must have been misquoting him. That must be another Tinubu, not the Tinubu I know.” But lest we forget, it was this same Senator Okunrounmu who in an interview granted  a national daily described Jonathan as a President who cannot be trusted and went at great length to trash the Jonathan presidency. Now, he has accepted his new appointment with glee. What more can be double speak.

Tinubu’s  right to hold a contrary opinion to what is happening now is supreme in a democratic setting. He holds up a mirror and he is asking Nigerians like the leader he is to take a look at what is being offered. He is not alone in this position and the attempt to shout him and others down is part of the problem Nigeria faces and will be the greatest undoing of the jamboree conference by Jonathan. For the records, the Odumakins and their likes do  not and cannot speak for me, ditto for many others. They can enjoy their conference. We will wait for them.

Tinubu is not a lone ranger in his suspicion and rejection of the Jonathan Conference. A co-secretary of the 2005 national political reform conference, Professor Ishaq Oloyede is also strongly suspicious of the national dialogue being proposed by Jonathan.

He said, “I have my very strong suspicion about the motive of the conference. I am very suspicious of the whole thing but the council will discuss it and we will come out with our own position. But for me as a person, I have my suspicion based on activities leading to the turn-around of the government because the government, including the Senate President, have been opposed to it but suddenly overnight, they changed their opinion. I am very suspicious; very, very suspicious of the change of mind”.

Now that’s a homer. It is provocative and dead centre. Can Jonathan and his co-travellers be trusted? Why are Nigerians been handed coco-yam when they have asked for bread?

Again, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, a former editor and veteran journalist, someone who has been part of the agitation for a national conference and who should know better has come out swinging against the Jonathan conference.
Senator Ojudu describes Jonathan’s National Conference as 'poison'. He went further to describe the decision to hold such a conference now as dishonest and deceitful. As far as he was concerned, the Jonathan government, beset by a myriad of economic and political woes, is employing the National Conference to divert the attention of Nigerians.

Senator Ojudu couldn't have couched it better when he said, “His consultants or advisers must have informed him of the workability of making Nigerians talk while trying to put his house in order.
The man is just looking for time and space to buy, persuade, blackmail or pummel to submission those in his party who are opposed to his continuous ruler-ship of Nigeria… It is also a strategy to put a stop to the APC progress of mobilising Nigerians for the 2015 elections.
I will not be surprised if the outcome of the conference says 2015 is no longer feasible for elections and that Jonathan should be allowed to continue in office.’’ I hope someone is listening.

Not done, Senator Ojudu went down the memory lane for the sake of those with short memories and exposed the Jonathan administration of borrowing from recent history when government after government gathered people in the name of National Conference or political summit so as to divert the attention of the people from the political challenges faced by government and thereafter jettisoned or watered down the recommendations of those conferences.

Ojudu  declared that his current opposition to the Jonathan National Conference is in no way at variance with is advocacy for a Sovereign National Conference  reminded Nigerians that he has always been a strong advocate of Sovereign National Conference, as opposed to National Conference, as far as 1990 when Alao Aka-Bashorun attempted to organise a Sovereign National Conference in Lagos.

A number of other prominent groups, individuals and organizations across the country have spoken up against the proposed National conference and questioned the sincerity of the Jonathan administration.

Indeed, the voices of reason and caution like that of Tinubu and others are been drowned out by the paid vocalists and choristers of the Jonathan administration. History bears Tinubu and others out that Jonathan does not have the sincerity and commitment to give Nigerians a sovereign national conference.

What Nigerians will get again is another “jebu” conference and we will be back to square one. For his boldness, presence of mind and consistency, Tinubu should be commended not condemned. On this issue, Tinubu stands on a higher ground.
